Kids Ink's a Bookstore Against Borders

7/16 UPDATE: Throughout July 4th weekend, donates and 10% of all sales were to be donated to RAICES thanks to A Room of One's Own bookstore in Madison, WI and their online fundraiser Bookstores Without Borders. We've finished checking the math, and thanks to all of you we raised a total of $657.05 - well beyond our initial goal of $500! This money contributes to the grand total of the #BookstoresAgainstBorders campaign, whose goal was $50,000, and ended with $83,100!

You are all wonderful, awesome people that've made a positive difference in the lives of people that really need it. Thank you!

If you buy anything from Kids Ink between July 5th and July 7th, 10% of you purchase will be donated to RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and legal Services), as part of the larger campaign Bookstores Without Borders

Bookstores Against Borders1

In Madison, WI, a bookstore named A Room of Our Own put into words what a lot of us are feeling: the refugee crisis on our country's southern border shames us all and history will judge us by what we've done about it. That's how the Bookstores Against Borders campaign came to life, and Kids Ink is thrilled to say we're doing what we can to help, too.

All you have to do to participate is shop at Kids Ink this Friday through Sunday. 10% will be donated to RAICES... it's just that simple. Online orders count too! For more information, or to donate directly, we've set up a fundraising page with more details

Make Summer Time Story Time!

This summer, Kids Ink's keeping it casual. From now until the end of the season, Story Time will start at 11am every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. And you don't need to sign up for a specific date, either. Just show up.

Kids Ink Bookstore Interior

Anyone with a 2-5 year old child can visit the store at 11am for Story Time - our staff'll pick out one of their favorite books, read it aloud to everyone gathered, and go from there. One day there may be oragami, the next day it could be chalk. Let's find out together!

Saundra Mitchell Event

Help recognize Gay Pride month by coming to met Saudra Mitchell -author of Mistwalker and the Vespertine Series- as she presents a collection of short stories featuring LGBTQ characters in the book All Out -The No-Longer Secret Stores of Queer Teens Throughout the Ages. She will be at Kids Ink on June 16th from 1-2:30pm.

Jeff Seymour Launches with "Nadya Skylung"

Jeff Seymour will be at the store Saturday, May 19th, from 1-2:30pm debuting his first novel published by G. P. Putnam (an imprint of Penguin Random House): "Nadya Skylung and the Cloudship Rescue"!

Nadya may be one of the many orphans collected by the gold-hearted Captain Nic, but she's determined to stand out. As the book opens, she's already indispensable as cloud tender to keep the skyship Orion sailing. A surprise pirate attack forces her and the other orphans to escape the only home they've ever known. Determination to return guides her and four friends back onto the Orion, and once aboard all their ideas and plans start souring. Maybe most important to Nadya is why the pirates boarded in the first place - was it a random attack like they all suspected, or are they looking for something (or someone) in particular?

This teen steampunk story of a young, orphaned engineer's apprentice appeals particularly to thriller readers and those interested in fantasy science. The illustrations by Brett Helquist promise to delight audiences, too! Jeff Seymour is a Lafayette, IN author.

Mark your calendars and prepare for an amazing cloudship cruise!

Children's Book Week - Celebrate Reading!

It's Children's Book Week and Kids Ink offers plenty of ways to celebrate!

Join us for our first Reading Without Walls event May 2nd & 3rd from 4-7pm, and May 4th from 4-6pm!
Reading Without Walls calls us all to explore books about:
◊ Characters who look or live differently than you
◊ Topics you don’t know much about
◊ Formats that you haven’t tried
You are encouraged to pick up a book and read right in the store!! There will also be a scavenger hunt (with prizes!)

Our Story Time regulars will also have the chance to meet Matilda this week! If you're not a regular, this is the sign you should start - Story Time is for children 2-5 and their grown-ups to read and interact with a story, often including a craft event. Call 317-255-2598 for a spot on our Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday spots starting at 9:30 AM.

Independent Bookstore Day & Latin Club This Saturday!

This coming weekend will leave a couple of impressions, it's that epic! On the national front, April 28th is Independent Bookstore Day!
Independent Bookstore Day 2018 Logo(small)
This is Kids Ink's 32nd year in business, so it's only right to join with the country in celebrating the magic and adventure local tome-peddlers bring each and every day. We'll have a few onesies, plushies, and other reading accessories for sale along with bookmarks and other goodies to give away. Visit IBD's own website for more about its history and how other stores are marking the occasion.

Did you know the concept of a spoken word album is thousands of years old? To learn what we're talking about, come check out North Central High School's Latin Club recite one of the earliest sung narratives: Vergil's Aeneid.
Latin Club Banner at Kids Ink
Since 2009, North Central's Latin Club delivered one of the classic Roman epics in front of a crowd, partially for practice but more as a fundraiser to support their War on Poverty. This year's goal is to raise $10,000 for the Shepard Community Center. Please stop by and experience one of the first group storytelling narratives and perhaps contribute to a truly noble cause. More information can be found here: https://www.nchs.cc/2018/04/students-take-a-stand-against-poverty/ If you don't have the time to read it, there's a great video they made that would make Homer proud at http://tinyurl.com/rtwop10promo2

The following Wednesday (May 2nd) kicks off another Story Time series, and this week's sessions features special guest Madeline visiting all the way from France!

Wednesday May 2nd also marks the first day of Kids Ink's Reading Without Walls event! On the 2nd and 3rd fromo 4-7pm and on May 4th from 4-6pm, Reading Without Walls is a part of Children's Book Week, a time dedicated to the importance and brilliance of connecting children with reading.

In particular, Reading Without Walls highlights the need for kids to learn about stories and characters from different perspectives or backgrounds, and generating that flash of wonder and excitement that comes when the mind realizes whole new possibilities. Kids Ink will host a scavenger hunt guaranteed to send participants all around the world (in our shop), with prizes at the end and reading segments all throughout.
