Troy Cummings Visits Kids Ink!

Troy Cummings, the author and illustrator of the Notebook of Doom series, will be at Kids Ink on April 7th from 1:00 – 2:30! Cummings’ new book Can I Be Your Dog? is a heart-warming story of Arfy the dog looking for his forever home.

In an effort to support our local animal shelters and the dogs looking for their own homes, we will be hosting a canned dog food drive. Along with normal canned dog food, shelters also need dog food for sensitive stomachs or prescription diet i/d for digestive care. The Humane Society of Indianapolis online wish list can be a good reference for types of canned dog food.

From now through the signing on April 7th, if you bring in a few cans of dog food to the store, you will receive 15% off of "Can I Be Your Dog?". Just bring your donation to the store counter!

John David Anderson Grants Kids Ink's Wish!

John David Anderson - the author of Ms. Bixby's Last Day and Posted - is set to launch his latest novel Granted with us at Kids Ink on Saturday, February 24th, from 2-3:30pm! There's a lot of magic in his work and all our shelves, so what better place to reveal a tale about a wayward wish-fulfilling fairy?

It's Ophelia's first day as a Granter, the dutiful calling of a fairy capable of making the secret wishes of humans come true! It's an honored and sacred task, for without the granting of human wishes, fairies lack the magic to make their basic ends meet, and global magic supplies are at an alarming low-point. As for the tone of this book, it's less about a quest of restoration and more a reminder of backyard splendor. It's about looking at what you can see every day, but seeing it just a little differently and finding something wonderful that way.

Kids Ink will have plenty of Anderson's books on hand that you can get signed, along with fairy-themed snacks! If you'd like us to hold one for you (a book, not a snack, sorry!), call us at 317-255-2598. It's going to be a magical time!

Kamilla Benko Arrives at Kids Ink!

Kamilla Benko gallops into the world of YA publishing with her debut novel, The Unicorn Quest. Kids Ink lucked out enough to host one of the stops on her launch tour: Saturday, February 3rd, from 1-2:30 pm.

Kamilla's from Indiana originally, but has been living in New York the past few years as an editor for children's books.

The Unicorn Quest is the story of Claire Martinson, a younger sister used to worrying about her older sister Sophie who only recently recovered from a strange illness. The two discover a staircase behind the fireplace in their great aunt's manor that leads them to a wonderous new world filled with miracles and dangers alike. They manage to return home, but with the way open now , there's nothing keeping the other world's inhabitants from using it themselves.

Kamilla's visit will include a short reading, some Q&A and discussion, and human-friendly unicorn treats. Call the store at 317-255-2598 for more information.

Ann M Martin Visits Glendale Library

Ann M. Martin will visit the Indianapolis Public Library’s Glendale location in partnership with Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore on Saturday, January 13th, 2018. Beginning at 2 pm, Ann will co-host a conversation about her works and process, answer audience questions, and sign copies of her books.

As the author of the Babysitter’s Club series, which has been adapted into graphic novels and television shows, she’s helped raise a generation of women. She won a Newbery Honor award for A Corner of the Universe, a novel about one girl’s relationship with her savant uncle. She lives in upstate New York, and is visiting Indianapolis to celebrate the release of the paperback edition of her latest book, Rain Reign.

Rain Reign focuses on Rose Howard, a girl on the autistic spectrum who finds comfort and stability in homonyms – words spelled or pronounced the same but with different meanings. Rose’s dog is her best friend and primary point of contact with the world, a role so important that Rose gave the dog a name with two homonyms: Rain (rein, reign). During the night of a terrible storm, Rose’s single father lets Rain out of the house, and by the next morning she’s nowhere to be found. To rescue her, Rose steps away from the rest of her habits and routines to brave the woods and bring Rain home.

We will have a selection of Martin’s backlist on hand for sale, and will also work with the library to lead activities that’ll make this event that much more special.

More details about the author can be found at her website, http://www.scholastic.com/annmartin/about. For more information on the signing itself, please call us at (317) 255-2598 or the Glendale branch of the Indianapolis Public Library at (317) 275-4410.

Our Holiday Open House Approaches!

As the year's end approaches, we're joining the rest of the shoppes at 56th & Illinois on Thursday, November 16th, in welcoming the new season. Each shop will have its own personal event or display, but we're lucky enough to have two amazing authors: Julie Segal-Walters and Rabbi Sandy Sasso, from 5:30-7pm!

Julie Segal Walters debuts as an author with This is Not a Normal Animal Book, illustrated by Brian Biggs. It may start normally enough, but quickly changes things around until before you know it cats lay eggs and and the couch disappeared because you're on the floor laughing. Readers of all ages chuckle at all the mixups, and parents won't mind reading this over and over - for their children or just themselves.

Rabbi Sandy Sasso's latest book, Who Counts? 100 Sheep, 10 Coins, and 2 Sons, retells three parables as a single story to help younger children with learning to count and why counting's so important. Who Counts? was written with Amy-Jill Levine and illustrated by Margaux Meganck. Sasso's books approach spirituality from different points of view, but always with the purpose of bringing people together.

As if having a pair of wonderful creators weren't enough, we'll serve snacks to go with the events and (hopefully) the weather. And guests might want to see what our front window's up to while they're there... and bring a camera!

Ridley Pearson Signing

We erroneously had it tagged on our calendar as the 19th. We apologize for the inconvenience.

It's Red & White, Can I Get a Clue? Waldo Season's Back!

Clean your glasses, prime your peepers, do whatever you've got to do to optimize your vision, because Waldo's running loose again in the shoppes of 56th and Illinois St! Kids Ink needs all young readers to report in and find him, and we can make it worth their time.

Waldo’s Anniversary is celebrated nationwide all month in July, and Kids Ink wants you to join the party. Neighboring stores will be hosting a Waldo figure somewhere for kids to find from July 15th through July 29st. Children can pick up a “travel guide” from Kids Ink and go looking for him around the neighborhood – with adult supervision, of course. Anyone that finds Waldo at every participating location and returns their list to Kids Ink will be entered for a prize drawing.

Originally intended to be a one-time-only event, The Great Waldo Hunt’s popularity exceeded so many expectations that Candlewick (Waldo’s publisher) keeps bringing it back, and it only gets more popular every year.

Kids Ink is one of 250 independent bookstores across the country participating, but we’re determined to have the most entries, and we need local kids’ help to make that happen. We’re looking forward to enjoying this with everyone in Indianapolis.
