Staff Reviews

While The War Outside is not a sequel to Hesse’s Girl in the Blue Coat, it provides yet another look at World War II from a different perspective.  Girl in the Blue Coat is an intense novel about spies and the black market in  Amsterdam, 1943.  The War Outside is equally intense but personally between two girls one German American and the other a Japanese American.  Both are in a detention camp with their parents near Crystal City, Texas; a special camp for Americans who have been accused of colluding with the enemy. Margot and Haruko crave the normal teen lives that they have left behind.  They find comfort in their growing friendship but can they trust each other and what if their budding love is discovered?  Like many families who were held in World War II detention camps, the families are devastated and the realistic ending is heartbreaking.

Fall 2018 Kids Indie Next List

“These teens couldn’t be more different: Haruko, Japanese American, outgoing, popular, compliant; and Margot, German American, reclusive, mistrustful, analytical. But what they have in common is more important: they’re very bright, observant members of families in turmoil, and in 1944 they’re living in an internment camp for enemy aliens. A secret and unlikely friendship becomes a lifeline for both of them. Like Hesse’s Girl in the Blue Coat, this riveting novel takes readers where we’ve never imagined going, with twists, turns, and startling intensity. The book is mesmerizing, empathetic, and incredibly timely in its treatment of injustice and fear of the other.”
