“In a crooked little house by a crooked little sea” scratched in the glass of the phone booth is metaphorically the story of Beverly.  Leaving home after her dog, Buddy, has died, Beverly’s world is tilted.  Her alcoholic mother doesn’t seem to care about her and only her best friend, Raymie has been there for her.  So, at age 14 she is no longer running away from home, this time she is leaving.

In DiCamillo’s characteristic spare prose, Beverly learns that family is not always those you are related to biologically.  Family is really those who care for you and accept you for who you are.  With a cast of unusual characters: Mr. Denby and his sad fish restaurant, Freddie who is not to be trusted, Charles and Doris in the restaurant kitchen, and Iola who is willing to invite Beverly into her little trailer by the sea, we learn about what it really means to care and be a family.

The story circles back to Raymie, the same as Louisiana’s Way Home, back to what it means to have one true friend.

This trilogy may be the end of the Raymie stories but I wonder what the next chapter in the lives of Raymie, Louisiana, and Beverly might bring.

“Kate DiCamillo trusts children, and it makes her writing remarkable. She trusts them to feel a range of complicated emotions, to experience hardship just like any adult, and to be capable, kind, cruel, self-directed, and a little lost. Beverly’s journey into a place away from her everyday world is a perfect respite from our own, though it never shies away from the fact that life is difficult. Runaway she may be, but Beverly is so clear-eyed and decisive that you might be inclined to follow her anywhere.”
